The Buffalo Inner City Youth Fan Club for Golfing inc., is a year round,
after school and summer program focusing on academic, athletic, recreational
activities to improve scholastics, athletic, health maintenance and life skills.
It is diverse, consisting of 50% black, 35% Caucasian, 10% Hispanic and 5%
American Indian; 65% male and 35% female, ages 6-18.
The program consists of four major components:
- Technique and fundamental of golf
- Mentoring and Life Skills, including entrepreneurship activities
- Education Enrichment that includes: tutorial services, teaching the math and
science of golf, and demonstrates how this math and science can be applied to
occupational and career skills. This is the "essence" of our "GOLFING PLUS"
Program
- Drug education - encourages youth to stay drug free with the help of certified
drug counselors from the Erie County Council for the Prevention of Alcohol and
Substance Abuse.
During the academic year and during the summer, golf education is conducted by
certified PGA, certified coaches of America instructors and top amateur golfers
belonging to the Delaware National Golf Club that is affiliated with this
program. Any youth demonstrating ability and interest is assigned to certified
instructors for further development of golfing skills.
Also during the academic year, golfing fundamental and techniques, golf history
and education is held at the collaborating agencies’ gyms and at the Western New
York First Tee (in-kind) Lifeskills only. The more advanced golfing students are
taken to local golf domes, (The Caddy Shack in Williamsville, NY and the Paddock
Golf Dome in Tonawanda, NY)
During the summer all youth enrolled in the program get an opportunity to play

Delaware National Golf Club, has a Saturday and Sunday golf schedule at golf
courses throughout the Niagara Frontier, taking youth from the program to play
along with the club’s members, who serve as mentors, providing an opportunity
for one on one mentoring.
Kids on Course, which is honored at various country clubs, sponsored by United
Golf Course Owners Assoc., allow youth to play at some golf courses throughout
WNY.
The Caddie Program is conducted at participating country clubs, where youth
learn caddying and work related to the golf industry.
The Life Skills and mentoring component is strengthened by its collaboration
with the Boy Scouts of America by their Venturing Crew, which recognizes golf as
a scouting activity. Youth belonging to the Venturing Crew do 4H activities as
an entrepreneurship development. The Education Enrichment and Tutorial component
during the academic year and summer is conducted by the BEAM program (Buffalo
Engineering Awareness for Minorities), consisting of engineers from industry and
the Black Student Engineering Association at the University of New York at
Buffalo. This component also uses an internet based tutorial program offered by
the Buffalo Urban League (collaborating agency) which provides an opportunity to
track students progress in academic performance and opportunity to create impact
studies. This has an impact on the youth in the program by providing them with
PGA sponsored scholarships, both academic and athletic through the WNY First Tee
Program (in-kind) Lifeskills only. The NCAA Tide 48 regulation states that any
student that pursues any sport must maintain at least a C average in order to
play sports. Tide 9 regulations read that all schools must provide the sporting
opportunity for female as well as male. Therefore there is a demand for female
golfing scholarships.
The Major Impacts of the Program (Objectives)
To establish new found ways to improve work ethic
The ability to improve on physical fitness
Promote responsibility in the children we work with increased coordination and self-discipline
Promote cooperation, respect and leadership
These objectives will help to curb violence in the community and at school by
instilling value, respect for each other and, create a disciplined environment
in the school setting that will be conducive to all children learning. Hopefully
youth enrolled in the program will serve as role models.
Long term goals are to produce law abiding, productive citizens and strengthen
labor forces that will help in attracting industry and business to this area and
to prevent youth from leaving the area.
