A Special Message from Major Henry S. Williams, Jr.
Founder/Emeritus - Buffalo Inner City Youth Fan Club for Golfing
Dear
Parent or Guardian,
Thank you for introducing your child to the Buffalo Inner City Youth Fan Club
For Golfing. Our program runs throughout the school year and has a summer
session as well. It is our mission to expose youth of all ages and
socio-economic backgrounds to the game of golf. Our instructors use golf as a
vehicle to teach math and science, and to help develop self-esteem, confidence
and healthy lifestyles. We make every effort through our mentoring to act as a
support system to help students cultivate and develop life skills necessary to
become responsible members of the community. We welcome and encourage you to
attend our board meetings, the after school classes, and golf lessons held at
the golf dome and golf courses.
Whether or not you play golf, there are a number of positive activities you can
take to assist with your child's golf education. Golf can be a difficult sport;
an encouraging word can go a long way toward keeping a child's interest alive.
It has been our experience that children who do not show a strong interest in
competitive golf often pick it up as a social sport as they mature. If the time
comes that your develops golf skills that bring about tournament participation,
your encouragement and involvement is vital. We are not always able to transport
students to these events, and your willingness to help them find or to provide
transportation will be a contributing factor toward their success. There may be
times when we can be of assistance financially by contributing toward an entry
fee, or by helping a student obtain necessary equipment. We do not want any
child to be left out of the golf experience simply because they cannot afford
golf clubs or golf balls. Our finances do not allow for extravagance, but we are
always willing to try to find a way to help any child who shows a sincere
interest in golf and displays positive efforts and attitudes.
Those students who are interested in college golf scholarships need to get an
early start accumulating all significant information relating to their golfing
experiences. When the time comes to send letters and resumes to colleges, we
will be happy to provide assistance in making your child's presentation
professional and to the point. It must be made clear, though, that achieving a
college golf scholarship is not automatically assured simply because a boy or
girl attends the Buffalo Inner City Youth Fan Club For Golfing activities.
Success in attaining a scholarship can only be achieved through much dedication,
practice, and consistent tournament participation. Academic performance is also
a major factor taken into consideration.
Pursuing a college golf scholarship does not necessarily mean that a student
will end up on the PGA or LPGA Tour like Tiger Woods or Michelle Wie. As a
matter of fact, less than 1% of all college golfers become successful tour
professionals. However there are a large number of jobs and careers associated
with golf. Hotel, restaurant, and tourism management all have close ties to the
golf industry. Golf course superintendents can earn degrees specializing in
horticulture, plant science and turf management. Golf experience can tie in with
many other courses of study leading to careers in equipment manufacturing, golf
course architecture, club or teaching professional, sports journalism, coaching,
sales, and association or program administration. Golf has a far reaching effect
in the business world.
Thank you for letting me share with you the enthusiasm we have for our program.
We hope to see you throughout the year enjoying with your child a great game
that's more than just another sport. If you have any other questions, please do
not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Maj. (Ret.) Henry S. Williams, Jr.
