The Buffalo Inner City Youth Fan Club for Golfing Inc.,
(formally the Buffalo Tiger Woods Inner City Fan Club for Golfing) is a
non-profit 501(3)(c) organization established in 1993 by
Major (Ret.) Henry S. Williams, Jr., US
Army, MSC+CSC, under the auspices of the Buffalo Community Partnership
Coalition. This is an organization consisting of individual volunteers and the
collaboration of area community based organizations, higher learning
institutions and the golfing community (locally and nationally). Because of the
collaborative effort of this program, it was awarded the
All American City Civil
Empowerment Award, which honors community projects that illustrate civic
partnerships and accomplishments enhancing the quality of life in the
communities of the Buffalo Niagara region.
Combining Education & Golf, For The Betterment Of Inner City Youth
In addition to golfing, the program offers two other components: life skills
and educational enrichment. The focus of the educational enrichment is on making
math and science relevant. Math and science awareness will be taught as they
relate to golfing. The concept of transfer learning will promote and stimulate a
need to study such courses as math, science, physics, chemistry, and biology.
The program is designed to enhance all of the skills of the learning domain:
problem solving, psychomotor, communication, cognitive, and affective skills.
Weekly, year-round classes conducted by volunteer mentors in all three
components of the golf program: golfing instruction, life skills/drug awareness,
education enrichment, and tutoring, will assure that our goals are met and the
needs of the youth are satisfied. In time the youth will be able to focus on
both academic achievements and athletic performance. Those who aspire to pursue
golfing as a sport will be accommodated with professional golfing instructions.
To promote academic excellence, youth will be linked with volunteers and
educational support services from local colleges and universities.
Major Accomplishments
1. The Buffalo Common Council declared January 25, 2000, Buffalo Inner City
Youth Fan Club Day - three youth from the program appeared before the Conmion
Council and received a proclamation for winning a beginners golf tournament in
Rochester, NY.
2. One youth from Buffalo won first place in the same tournament held in
Syracuse, NY.
3. The program won the Civil Empowerment Award presented by the greater Buffalo
All American City Committee the program won the Erie County Award for the
prevention of alcohol and substance abuse the program won the True Bethel
Community Service Award.
4. The program received the Mary B. Talbot Community Service award in February
2001. The program has received extensive media coverage over the years of
operation. It also received a citation from Congressman Jack Quinn, Judge Sam
Green and Assemblyman Art Eve.
5. The USGA has identified the program as a "model program".
The social, economic impacts on the community are the same as in long-term
goals. The program provides revenue to the City of Buffalo by purchasing golf
passes for the youth. Over the last two years the program has spent $2,500 for
these passes. The program uses city businesses for van leases, van insurance,
golfing facilities and supplies, printing and copying. The program is diverse
and serves council manic districts throughout Buffalo, Masten, Fillmore,
Niagara, Ellicott, University and North, and is open to all districts including
Erie County.
The Buffalo Inner City Youth Golf Program encourages, supports and prepares
youth from the inner city and throughout greater Buffalo and Erie County to
pursue the sport of golf and other athletic, academic and technical careers
including the golfing industry.
The program provides developmental learning experience in addition to golfing
instructions that are not only enjoyable but also educational and effective in
promoting academic excellence, (our motto is, Grades Up, Scores Down); teaching
good citizenship and a life long drug free productive individual. The program’s
objective is to introduce a non-traditional sport as a new learning activity.
The goal is to create an interest in golfing using that interest to promote
other learning experiences. The program employs the concept of transfer learning
to promote scholastic achievement and social skills. The interest created in
this sport is conducive to promoting a crime and drug free environment because
golfing has all the behavioral aspects that help produce strong character and
social skills associated with productive law abiding citizens. This is why the
game is called "a gentleman's game".

Our Mission
The Buffalo Inner City Youth Fan Club for Golfing, Inc. is a nonprofit
organization with after school and summer programs consisting of volunteers and
partnering with area churches, community based organizations, colleges and the
professional golfing community. The program encourages, supports and prepares
youth from the inner city to pursue the sport of golf and other athletic,
academic and technical careers. We are especially excited with the collaboration
of the Willie "Hutch "Jones Sports Clinic.
The program will provide youth with developmental learning experiences in
addition to golfing instruction that is not only fun, but also educational and
effective in promoting academic excellence teaching good citizenship, and a life
long drug free individual. We also use the most dynamic and “state of the art”
teaching methods, including the “Stick to Golf” scholastic teaching method,
which is designed to make golf fun.
